Kutuk Serangan Israel
500 Anggota Persis Geruduk Dubes AS
Andi Saputra – detikNewsJakarta – Aksi penolakan agresi Israel ke Palestina masih terus didengungkan. Sekitar 500 orang dari Persatuan Islam (Persis) melakukan aksi jalan kaki dari Gedung PBB, Jl MH Thamrin menuju gedung Kedubes Amerika Serikat (AS), Jl Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta Pusat.
Mereka melewati rute jalur cepat Jl MH Thamrin, Bundaran Indosat, Jl Medan Merdeka Selatan, Sabtu (3/1/2009).
Selain itu mereka juga membawa pamflet bertuliskan “Go to Hell Israel from Paletine” dan “Israel Laknatullah”.

Here are some photos of the demonstration. At one stage some of the demonstrators put on a martial arts display, a display of readiness to fight if they were sent to Palestine at the time.

By Persis standards, 500 people at a demonstration outside of West Java seems to be reasonably large, though once again it took an issue of ‘Islamic solidarity’ in this case to bring them out on to the streets. I am interested in finding out what issues actually get Persis members out on to the streets, and whether they do this on their own or as part of a wider forum or gathering of organisations (such as through the Forum Umat Islam, Islamic Community Forum).
From what I have generally heard of before, it seems the issues which are most likely to get Persis members out on to the street are either to do with ‘Islamic solidarity’ issues (the Palestinian question in particular), or issues to do with morality, such as protests against Miss Indonesia which I seem to vaguely recall them being involved in (might have to chase up the article in question).
The question of protesting along side with other groups would also be an interesting one to address. Does Persis have the confidence and numbers to organise protests on their own? Why? Why not? And if they organise protests with other groups, what role do they play? Why do they choose to protest with the groups they do?
